Drove past the Cora depot on a short trip through Southern Illinois. Barges in the river unload the coal and trains pull in to load up.

My kind'a spot Joe. I wouldn't mind hanging out there for a day to watch the operation.
EDIT: I was interested enough to Google Earth this shot. Interesting...They have an gaint oval train track around the entire operation that looks just like a huge Christmas train layout. Thanks for sharing Joe. Very interesting

Yep, gotta keep the lights on in the Midwest. This is one link in the process as the coal is transferred for overland transport.

Anything related to the river is an interest to me. You'd normally never know places like this exist if you stay on the normal roads. I have this habit of driving the levees. This is one of my favorite levee drives as much of the levee top is paved. It's great to get a view from 60 feet up and have zero traffic. This levee drive is a good one starting at Cora just below Chester. You can stay on the levee all the way to Gorham which includes a drive past the Wildlife Refuge (bird heaven).

Thanks. No clue what the shed is for -- I could only speculate. Maybe they can get a quick oil change while loading up.
