Sometimes I have to search for a subject.

Ron couple of questions for you. Was this supposed to be a silhouette? What were you going for this? Did you scare all of your birds off?

Ron couple of questions for you. Was this supposed to be a silhouette? No, a back-lit subject. What were you going for this? Something out of the ordinary, very ordinary. Did you scare all of your birds off?

Laf, the birds had gone to bed.

Ok great. Now, with that in mind I will C&C if that is what you were looking for. Since you did not intend for this to be a silhouette, and instead a backlit subject, I think there still needs to be some fill light. There is just not enough detail in the gear. If you used a reflector or even on camera flash to brighten it up a bit I think the details could be brought out. I like the Composition quite a bit. However, I think if you showed a little bit more of the lines going to the left it would draw the eye in from the left a little better and into the gear.

When you use your reflector or flash try to not illuminate the leaves or even the tree. Just the pulley.

I did a really quick and really bad edit to kinda show what I mean. I tried to add some highlight like you might get with a reflector from lower left. I would say go out tomorrow and try this same shot with some different lighting techniques at different times of the day. I LOVE your wildlife shots and this is something different for you. I think you did a good job with what you tried and I KNOW you can do better with a little more practice.

Note: I KNOW my edit is terribad. Please, forgive me. Everyone, please =)

Interesting idea. I was using a longer lens so maybe a reflector might not work but a flash might off camera. I do feel that your edit gets away from my "vision" in that it opens up more detail & presents a close to "properly" exposed pulley.

I hope others will chime in here with their opinions.

I think there is just enough light to make it work, at least on my screen. I can see detail, but not too much detail.

I think it's a pretty good looking gear.. erm.. pulley. ;)
