Why do previously sharp landscapes images turn to mush after posting

You are taking into account the size difference to get it on here right? My images on here don't hold a candle to the full resolution ones, they end up only being a few MP. That's a given...

I've found that how they are posted also has an affect, direct uploading an image from PC, or BBCode link from Flickr have different qualities. Google tends to compress images to save space, and other general storage sites do the same, and that can cause quality loss.
