You could rent each of the lenses before buying to see which fits your needs.

The 85mm G f/1.4 is $84 for a seven day rental.
The 24-70mm f/2.8 is $66 for a seven day rental.

I have used LensRentals before and had a very good experience with them.

I wish I could, but I am living overseas right now. I tried looking for a Nikon store around here in Turkey but it is a very rural area and I can't find any stores.
I will be going in blind and that is why I am bugging everyone with a ton of questions. I just can't wait to buy something, it's getting harder to keep waiting.

When I do a google search on Best Nikon Lenses, it pulls up these silly selections and not once mentions 24-70 or 70-200?!? I am finding the web very unreliable for help in this matter. They expect me to believe the 18-200 outranks the 24-70 or 70-200, when nobody even seems to own that lens. Very rigged lists.

Sorry, just frustrated on the constant web run around. I just need to buy a lens and get over it already, 24-70 here I come!

In your case (location, location, location), the versatility of the 24-70mm may be the wiser option. However 3rd party lenses are an option also. It'll save you some cash now and later you could upgrade without having a severe hit...... just a little punch in the gut.

Oh lordy, I don't think I can even wrack my mind anymore about lenses. My hubby told me I can get any lens under 2000, so I am maxing out that budget while I have the chance.

No way. Her camera rocks! Plus if you like to spot meter - a lot of Canons only spot meter from the center whereas Nikons meter off the active focal point.
Not saying Nikons are better in any way, shape or form but....she already has an awesome camera!

I couldn't decide so I got both You can get the older 35-70mm f2.8D used for around $300-400. The sharpness of that lens is unbelievable for that price. It is as sharp as the newer 24-70, but focus is a bit slower. For studio use, it's perfect.

You could always get the 24-70 and then if you decide you want the 85 - you could always get the cheaper sigma 85 1.4g or the Nikon 85 1.8d or the new Nikon 85 1.8g is coming out around march(?) and it will be about 500.00.

How much time do you have behind the camera prior to November? If November is the start date, then I highly suggest to throttle back, particularly if you are budget minded. If $$$$ is not an issue, then more discussion is in order.
