Here is my first black and white. We had a storm start yesterday and had freezing rain. The grass looks blurry but its actually ice forming.

Great first attempt! You found something that contrasts very much with its surroundings, so you're on your way to being a B&W master already :)

Some things to consider: Your subject, the drill/corkscrew thing, has grass blocking it from the viewer in a manner that does not flatter it. Next time try to think of all the most interesting elements in a shot -- like the snow, the drill, and the icy grass. The trick is to figure out how to arrange all of the interesting elements single shot that is most pleasing and complete to the viewers eye.

Good job, keep it up!

I may play with the brightness/contrast and exposure on this for fun and whatever else...play with it on Gimp maybe..see what turns out:). Good attempt! Mine was pretty flat looking all around. Snow is hard to shoot exposure wise, at least it is for me! So you did well on your first attempt!

Agree, I think there's great potential with the subject, work on the composition and it'll shine :)

I would also see if you can't make the grey's slightly darker...the problem with using just contrast and exposure is that alot of times it will blow out your whites...and with snow there is alot of that...my suggestion would be to play around with selective colors if you can...blacks and neutrals or grey's turn them darker just slightly then bump the contrast just a smidge.
