Putting the camera away at a specific setting, is an interesting idea.

My suggestion was to help make it second nature when you pick up the camera, the first thing you do is assess your lighting and set the ISO.

Find whatever works best for you though.

Ah, I never thought about the variable aperture lenses being the problem. Once you get away from them, you kinda forget.
