#1 you cut off the barrel and grip. Good lighting and setup #2 is underexposed and not super interesting

The barrel isn't cut off, maybe it's the angle? Thanks for the comments!

What I meant was the light on the barrel Is cut off. Even though it's ever so slightly there is a ton of dead white space on the left and cut off pieces of your subject

Oh... well how would I not do that? :blushing:

Take the picture again and don't cut off pieces of the subject. I like the angle and lighting, the composition is lacking

Ok, are you talking about cropping or? Could you explain what you mean when you say the composition is lacking? Sorry, this is all really new to me. :blushing:

No one else has any comments? Are they that bad?

No, they aren't that bad. For someone completely green that are pretty fair.

What part of the pistol were you trying to emphasize? The manufacturer's logo? The light manufacturer's logo? The whole pistol? Decide WHAT you want to show and they go about finding the way to show it to it's best. Use the light, the depth of field, the composition. Use everything to define the part that you want to emphasize.

When shooting objects you treat them like people. A photo of a girl with half her head cut off would not be appealing would it? In the same way a pistol with half of a grip isn't either. Try to arrange the shots the whole pistol is in frame. By shifting the frame, it eliminates all the dead space (all the unproportional white in this case) and gets more of the subject in view. Even the slightest knick is distracting (as in the tip of the light in this case)

#2...Well to me the background is to dark, I tend to analyze it more then i notice the wrench..just my opinion

Hmm.. Lots to think about, thanks!

That's completely fair. I just wanted to try and set something up and actually use my new camera. :-P I did mean to have the engine/car darker to emphasize the wrench. Seems like it came out to be a mess though.
