My first DSLR, who are you?

I speak Canon, so that's what I'll use. If I were looking to get in the hobby, and used was an option, I'd be looking for something like a 40D with kit lens, and put the rest of the money into a Canon 50mm 1.4, or Sigma 50mm 1.4. Honestly, a grand ain't gonna get you a monster kit, but it can get a nice body with a respectable kit lens and one nice lens, and you can add more glass as time and budget allow. Cheap glass is just, well, cheap, and will always leave you dissattisfied. An 18-55mm IS kit lens is pretty decent, and a nice 50mm prime is a huge step up from that, so the two together will deliver quality you can live with. The natural inclination is to want a bunch of glass to go with your body, but the fact is, your budget doesn't allow for that. It's an expensive hobby, and quality matters. Unless you're a MWAC.

As my second DSLR I have a d90 and love it. Id say stay away from the 3000,3100,5000. Get a prime and a nice 18-105/135 sorta lens so cover all your other mm's
