these were the first pictures i'd ever taken with my D40. it was a wedding gift, so there was no better place to start than my honeymoon to jamaica. i didn't have any tripod or monopod so i tried my best to hold steady. these are 100% untouched. i know i still have a lot of practice to do. let me know what you think.

Just my opinions are all with my unexperienced "photographic eyes" and critiques.

1. Nice picture. Love the buildings. But seems a bit busy overall

2. A bit out of focus and would have been better without the background. I think 2 steps to the left (to eliminate the column) would have been good as well as a lesser depth of field.

3. Not too bad, but the angle isn't working for me

4. Nice shot, but seems a little over exposed.

5. Strongest of the bunch, but the left side of the flowers kinda blend in with the ones behind it

6. I like the blue tint in the picture, but there seems to be no central point of focus.

thank you for the opinions! positive and negative both help!

they are some good photo's number 2 could probably be a little darker and the last one could probably be a little bit sharper

I agree with most peoples comments. First is decent, rest don't really offer a lot of interest for me. Two had potential but needed a slightly more offset composition and definitely some improvements on the color to make it pop more.

Keep at it!

I think these are actually really really good for just having pulled the camera out of the box and started shooting without any experience, first one is my favourite.

Good work

For me I would crop out the blown out sky in the top of number 1. This then becomes my favourite shot, with the lines of the buildings snaking through the landscape.

The second one is blurry and I can't see where the focus point was. It might have been camera shake. Try and keep an eye on the shutter speed.

The last photo doesn't seem to have any real subject, just large areas of blue.

Still, as first shots go, not bad at all. :D
