My First Self Portrait.....

Simple three light setup. Main metered at f/8, Fill and Accent metered at f/5, silver reflector opposite Main. Several shots of tequila, but no animals harmed.

A new leather jacket and cashmere sweater bought on after Xmas sale. The suit and topcoat are still at the tailors to be picked up later this week.

You did a great good, and handsome man! Maybe lower the contrast a little or to give you a little softness. I like the wardrobe, good choice. Self-protraits are hard to do.

That's what hit me as well. Perhaps a crop half way between shoulder & elbow.

I think the hands are absolutely, 100% essential in this composition. Look at the way they "advance", due to being light....and then the arms lead up and to the shoulders, and then the face stands out so well, due to its lightness. Shoulders are both highlighted, very subtly. Hat has excellent, very subtle rim lightng. The hands at the lower right are light, and they show up well...but look at the dark shirt and the brighter zipper lines of the jacket front...they being lighter than the black lead upward, to the face. This pose has the hands as anchors lower right, then two SETS of lines that lead upward to the face, or from the face downward to the hands, which keeps the eyes moving. The face,being lightest in tone, holds a tremendous amount of the visual weight. There are no "dead-ends" in this pose. It's just freaking excellent.
