My first

Well I don't have my scanner purchased yet, so I'll throw an old one from my digital camera up and see how I fare..

Everything seems to be on the right side of the picture. proportion is the big issue here.

Yeah the background is pretty bleak, my digital is just a p&s, but say I set up a shot like this with my SLR, what would you recommend to improve it?

It really doesn't matter, some people may be able to afford the most expensive cameras but its not going to tell them what to shoot. You'd be surprised at what some people can compose from a disposable camera.

IMO the composition is the weakness of the shot, the image quality is good, so no a SLR would not help and P&S did not hurt it

Try re-shooting at different angle with more of the farm equipment in the view, or on a day with more clouds in sky with and without the equipment and the time of day
