Thay all look slightly overexposed on my monitor.

If you can't change the background, use a large aperture to blur it out as much as possible.

It looks like you're using the on-camera flash: if you don't have other lighting options, try to diffuse or bounce the flash. My own preference is to use existing light whenever possible. Your DSLR, if it's a recent model, probably has pretty decent high ISO capabilities.
