I discovered a ground nest of Yellow Jackets in our yard a couple weeks ago. Earlier in the year one had popped me on the back while mowing, but the grass cover was hiding the nest. I sprayed it, causing them to swarm, which caused me to leave the scene quickly. I intended on coming back later to dig it up and destroy it. Looks like the Dillos beat me to it. It's a wonder the DW and I didn't get stung really bad.

Nice to have an area ally. Yellow Jackets can be very pesky and their sting compared to their small size is really powerful. Thirty years ago we lived on a mountain ridge and had a couple of Yellow Jacket nests in the yard until one night a black bear came through and had a feast. I was really surprised how deep in the ground these nest can go. Good your grandchildren didn't stumble upon them!

They had a head start on the hole. They built in a hole left by a decayed root/stump. Even though the hole was bigger then my fist the grass had hidden it well. Once the frost killed off the grass, it became visible. Glad no one else found it, because they can be extremely vicious, attacking in mass. A few years ago, at a brush fire on the side of the mountain, a friend of mine was hauling guys up the fire break cut by the dozer, on his UTV. He stopped to wait on the dozer right on top of a nest that had just been split open. Of the 4 guys on board, 3 of them received multiple stings, and were treated on the scene, but one poor guy went to the hospital with stings everywhere.
