My shutter won't close when my flash is attached!!!

I have a Minolta XG1 and a Minolta 132X flash. That is one of the recommended flashes for that camera. The majority of the time when I have the flash attached and on, the shutter won't close and the flash won't fire until I shut one of the two off. This happens in both of the automatic and the manual settings on the flash. I've tried different settings on the camera as well. If I attach the flash to my Holga 120N, it fires with every shot. I've tried new batteries in both my camera and my flash. I have a sync cord as well, but I don't really know what that's for. I don't really even know much about the flash. Can anyone help??

The sync speed for this camera is between 1 and 1/60s ... was your shutter speed higher than that ?

Does the camera work OK without the flash attached?

Yes, the camera works perfectly. I just put the flash on the camera, set the shutter speed to 30. It flashed for a few shots. I turned the shutter speed up to 1000 and the shutter stayed open until I turned the flash off. I turned the flash back on and turned the shutter speed to 125. The shutter opened and closed quickly, but sounded slow for that speed and I got no flash. I turned it back down to 30 and now the shutter remains open until I shut something off. The flash will also fire no problem when I release the shutter button in bulb mode. This is all in an auto setting on the flash.

Also, if I shut the camera off to close the shutter, the flash will fire. If I shut the flash of to close the shutter, the flash doesn't fire.

Have you tried putting the flash in manual mode?

Yes, I've tried that as well. I can't figure out what I'm Doing wrong. I amazingly even found instructions for both the camera and the flash online.

I haven't heard of this particular problem before but the X-series Minoltas are prone to electronic problems caused by component failures.

The only viable solution these days is to get another working body.

Well, it could be the flash.

Try a different one.
