ok i decided to try smoke last night and here is my best

im relatively new to photography. i've never photographed smoke like this before. id LOVE to learn. do you just photograph smoke with light emanating from below + a black background?

Your OP says nothing about being the same photo...

yeah... i couldn't quite get the right result, i now realize that it is because i was using a blown out candle instead of a constant source like incense

Well now you know.

That must have been annoying, lighting, blowing out, lighting, blowing out...:lol:
 
yeah especially when the light ran out of fuel, and i couldn't even push the gas button on the new one
 
Before the magazine article came out I tried to do smoke photography with a big box of wooden matches. Now THAT was annoying!
OP, I like the purple as it gives the most contrast.
