NAS Redundand drive?

I'm tired of having multiple seperate back-up drives and am looking for a redundant drive that I can network from my wireless router. I've looked at the Seagate units but they don't get a good rap so I figured I'll ask you.

I'd like one that is upgradeable and maybe start with 2 bays with 2T drives. Any advice?

FWIW, I've never felt the urge to get a RAID. Having 5 stand-alone 2tb Seagates, this allows me to not only have multiple back-ups, but to keep them separated. If one drive crashes, I'm out a c-note. If someone breaks in and steals the hard drive sitting on my desk, I have two more in the safe. If I have a fire that's hot enough long enough to destroy those three drives, I have two others stored off-site.... on next door and one 4 states away.

About the only thing I have to worry about is an ELE.

Yeah and that's how I have it currently with seperate drives here and there but the problem is that it's still like having all my eggs in one basket or a pain in the arse to go around and copy each drive so that if I have a failure of a single drive I won't lose my precious data.

With a raid setup I can have mirror drives in constant use and then back up to removable drives for archiving. At least that's my thinking process.

True.... probably the biggest cause of data loss is hardware failure. So having multiple drives is the answer.

My problem is.... there's more to life than hardware failure. For a couple hundreds bucks, I have two 2tb hard drives stored off-site. This protects me if someone breaks into my house and cleans me out, or if I have a serious fire in my house, or some other catastrophe where I lose everything in my house (like a flood or tornado).

I realize having drives stored somewhere else is a pain, but it's cheap cheap cheap cheap insurance.

Looks like the Promise NAS' we use here at work... perfect for home use if it's within budget.

I don't use it, but a friend of mine (Member Speedtrap) uses it. He seems to like it.

I have 2 computers, wrote a small batch script to use robocopy to mirror them over the network. Ideally I'd want a JBOD chasis to mirror them locally.

A warning about the Drobo. I've had one for a couple years, and at random, it claims one of the drives is failing or not there. I pull it out, push it back in, and it works again...but...it goes through a 3-7 days long rebuild every time, during which your data is NOT protected against drive or power failures. I switched over to a dedicated RAID-5 server, and it's been much, much better.

That being said, if you still want a Drobo...I have one to sell!
