I bought a Tiltall tripod from a guy on craigslist and, unfortunately, it wasn't in the same shape he said it was in. I tried to fight it through PayPal but they are as worthless as teets on a boar if you get my meaning.

Anyway, I decided to try and salvage it. Two of the legs are really solid and one not so much but I can fix it. I removed the tilting mechanism and cut off the "ears" that attach it to the round base on the center post. I removed the base (it's got a set screw and is press fit to the column so I had to whack it pretty good to get it off) and smoothed off the top with files and sandpaper. I drilled and tapped a 3/8"-16 hole in it and put a 3/8"-16 x 3/4" bolt in from the underside, secured with red Loctite and a lock washer. I put the base back on the column and now I just need to fit a ball head to it.

My question is, what ball head to buy? I have WAY too much money in this thing already ($60 + $15 S&H -- when you can buy a new one for $99 + S&H). I have been looking at the Giottos MH7001 with a 652 quick release attachment for $60 and the Bogen 486 with the RC2 release attachment for $69 (both below).

Like I said, cost is a factor so can anyone comment on these two heads or maybe recommend something else in the same price range? The other major consideration is that the base on the Tiltall is 2 1/4" wide so I need something with about a 60mm base. I'll be using a D70S with the biggest lens being a 70-300mm f/4-5.6 zoom.

Thanks,
Greg
