so from what I'm reading, a D70 is better than a Rebel?
It depends on which one. The XTI and XSI might have a step up. It also depends on what you want to do. The D70 has a CCD sensor, iirc. These have poor noise performance at high ISO's in comparison to the CMOS sensors, which are in pretty much every Canon camera and most of the new Nikon cameras.
The big plus of that is that it's rated flash sync speed of 1/500 (which is higher than the CMOS sensor'ed cameras with the mechanical shutters) is not a true rating of max flash sync speed for the D70. It can actually sync up to the maximum shutter speed of the camera, as long as you're firing with a cable or remote, due to having an electronic shutter. This can be an awesome tool when you're using artificial lighting.
