Need help to understand lens length

Can someone please explain ( in very basic terms ) how far would I have to be positioned from my subject ( birds or other wildlife ) with different lenses ( 250 mm 500mm ect. Or recommend any.

there is a focal length calculator on this website which allows you to input subject size, subject distance, and crop factor (camera type) and it will calculate the focal length required.

Ok thats a great tool. But can anyone recommend a good lens for me. To take wildlife shots. So I don't get too close and startle them. Maybe a lens which is good for both wildlife and sport. Around mid price range.

Ok I understand the calculator but what does feild of veiw mean. Is it the maximum size of the subject zoomed at that distance with that camera and focal length.

Sorry if this is very noob. But I think s greater understanding will let me make a much smarter choice when buying a lens

Field of view is the width of the view from side to side, normally expressed in degrees, that you would see with a particular lens. A wide angle lens, for example, will have a much wider field of view than a telephoto lens.

Keep in mind one other factor. In 35mm terms a 500mm lens is a 10X telephoto. While that sounds pretty good a 10X telephoto also magnifies any shake by 10X. With that size lens you will probably need either a lot of light for a high shutter speed or a tripod. With a 2X convertor my 400mm becomes an 800 or 16X tele. There is no way to hand hold that. Even the best IS can not keep up with that.

I also take wildlife photos, and I just bought a tamron 70-300 with vibration control, very happy with it. Have a look
