Need help with identifying flash

I'm not a complete dummy. I do know a lot about photography but most of the books I've read never cleared up to me the different types of flash and how they work. I've had all sorts of terms thrown at me and I don't know what does what. Any help someone could lend to lighten the situation would really help.

flash is flash. there are no different types of flash -- different brands, wattages, outputs, etc...but it's just flash.

a big 4800 w/s studio kit is the same banana as that little on-camera pop-up flash. it's just a bigger banana.

I meant that there is slave flash and studio flash and thos sorts of things. I am confused with the whole issue. I'm wondering how each of the different flashes work so I can figure out which I'd like to try using.
