What's new

Need help with new camera purchase

I couldn't afford a D7000. I went to best buy where they promptly gave me a bazallion dollars in credit, and offered me 18 months interest free. I bought it. I don't regret it. It will be paid off in a couple of weeks, same as cash. Nothing lost...... it's only money.

The D90 is great. If I had to do it all over again, I would have still opted for the D7000.

Buy what you want, what you need, and what you know you won't be disappointed with in the future. Also, who gives a **** if you buy it on credit? Credit is a wonderful thing if it isn't abused.

My guess is that you are going to get the D90 home, and a week later say "I wonder what it would have been like if I had bought the D7000. [sigh]"

But if you opt for the D7000, you will probably say "With the money I would have saved by getting the D90, I could have probably purchased (insert higher end used lens here). [Sigh]"

Decisions, decisions.......

Oh yeah, and don't listen to anyone on the intertubes. They are all out to get you.

Trust me.

Yeah, I can see myself getting the D90 now, and a lens. And then upgrading my body next year.

The D90 is going to be a huge upgrade, and I don't know how long I could shoot with just an 85mm 1.8.

I need a good wide angle zoom.

Yep adding good glass or having a lack of it. Would go the D90 and lens option.
And I do generate monies from my D90 - Tamron 17-50 f2.8. Not a whole lot but just 2 weeks ago was paid from an ad agency from the Netherlands for use of one of my images in a brochure. The money generated has not even come close to what I have invested in gear. But for me it is mostly a passion and the payment is getting an image just right! and getting joy from the results. And having and using different array of lenses from a Sigma 10-20 to a 80-200 f2.8 AF-D has given me great opportunities for getting that special image.

For me I would always choose lens options with camera body then next up camera body and no lenses. Of course if you have lens needs met than by all means get the best bod you can afford.

There will always be that next upgrade body in front of you enticing you to ditch what you have.

I am not hiding the purchase from my wife, I'm hiding the cost of the purchase from my wife. Trust me, she doesn't want to know.

Sounds like you are deluding yourself on this aspect of the purchase.

I dunno...Nikon models run for a long time...it is best to buy a new Nikon model right when it comes out, and use it for 3-4 years, as you have done with the D70...Nikon is not Sony or Pentax or Canon....there will not be a D7000 replacement in 13 months...

You might be right about the first part...I don't mind being a little deluded if it gets me what I want .

I like that advice for anyone considering those two cameras.

Michiganfarts, I hope I didn't offend you with financial advice and I don't think I expressed any assumption. I humbly assure you I'm qualified to give financial advice. I am on a mission to help so please forgive me.

No need to apologize. I wasn't offended. Just wanted to say, not everyone who uses credit is doomed for disaster.

If you're looking for the UWA lens to go with your new D90 ( :D ) then I would highly suggest the Tokina 11-16 2.8. AWESOME lens.

yeah, I saw some pics taken with that thing. I think that, or something similar would be great.

If you took the 18 months no interest....it would almost be equal to upgrading next year but you could have it now? I say this ONLY if you are responsible enough to make the payments. You know if its not paid off in 18 months they tack ALL of the back tax onto the owed amount right? Or you could just scour craigslist and ebay in a couple months and find some sucker who took out a BestBuy card, bought a D7000, lost his job/wife/ ability to walk etc etc, and wants to sell it for a steal.

Personally, myself, I like to buy with cash, and really shun credit as well. Although about $80 bucks a month wouldn't be bad with no interest. I could fit that into my budget. Thats the key though, my wife and I have our bills budgeted. ( ie....we don't hide expenses, trust me, you do NOT want to set the precedent for that. A woman with a license to spend has been the downfall of many great men :lmao: )

The people have spoken. This thread is now about whether or not I should finance a camera or not.

Here is what you do, based on the discussion... do not buy a D90... that is do not buy one new...

The camera is a great camera, I have used one for two years taking these shots: Glamour Photography Scottsdale Phoenix Arizona

I have just ordered a D7000. Yes in a year or two, there will be the DXXXX whatever... yes, the D7000 will be obsolete, as the D90 is obsolete. Do not buy obsolete for new.

For now, sell ur D70, you will get $300 bux plus on it.

Buy a used D90. You will save a few bux on it over new.

If you are going to buy new, buy the D7000. (I had a D70, sold it and a kit lens for $600 bux a bit over a year ago, to help pay the D90.)
