Need some C&C Please!

okay so I'm a Photography student; and one of our first assignments is simply (or not so much) "RED,GREEN or BLUE"

just need some thoughts on this, basically natural light and a spur of the moment shoot lol

I think it looks better if you look at it on flickr

I'm not a people photographer, but I like the composition of this. You cut off her right elbow, not sure if you meant to do that.
It is indeed very red!

I like it but the book looks out of place maybe open in and have her reading it with a red light on the page to keep with the red

There's an effect that's almost the opposite of selective coloring where the hardware on the jacket is (the snap, zipper, and part of the pocket), as well as that slightly blond streak in her hair. To me, they're kind of distracting - it makes me wonder why they're the only thing in the frame that isn't red, the same way that selective coloring can pull attention away from the subject when it's used improperly. Otherwise it's an interesting photo.

I don't care for it really, sorry.

As a student, and me being a student before...I don't think that is what they had in mind. When I select topics for our contests I try to make the user use their minds eye to see something differently and catch it on film. Not "create" the topic. I hope that makes sense.

in that shot, you took a pretty boring shot honestly, and had a red bulb to make it "red". I would think you would do better to find something that is red and shoot it in an interesting way...not make it red.

just my two cents.


...the water drop is kinda neat...but I think you can do better. ;-)

Hey, lunch.box.

I see potential here, but IMO this is not the shot you want.

While nearly everything is red, it is just too literal.

You apparently put a lot of effort into this, and heaven knows where you found so many red garments for your model, but I think what your instructor wants is the CONCEPT of red more than simply the color.

I might like this shot better if I could see the model's face, and if you had not cropped her arms.

Why not re-shoot this, and turn it into something else? I think if your model was interacting more with the camera it could have more power than it does now.

I think it wouldn't even have to be in color. You could shoot something that makes you think of or feel "Red" for example. Someone angry, say. (Someone sad if the assignment were "Blue"... etc.) IME, a more creatively thought-out product may get a better grade than one that is technically very good but stays within the utterly literal reading of the assignment. Don't get stuck on the definition, open it up and use it as a starting point

Is there a visual pun in here with the book? Red/Read? I think you could push that a bit further, make it more clear. I am getting a sense of 'rejecting/done with' the book, listening to something on a modern media device, rejecting the written word here, but it's subtle and possibly not intentional at all.

Not a big fan of the "raise the black point so we feel like we're living in fog" look here or anywhere else, and I don't think it adds anything to this shot.

The badly fitting gloves bother me for some reason.

no red bulb was used, like i said it was basically light from a living room window thats it.

thats a great idea but my instructor made it clear that the subject had to be ALL the colour we chose i.e red green or blue its kinda a lame course but its just first year lol basically had a class on how to turn a camera on lol

to be honest it was just something else red but i like where you were going lol

and ya the gloves bug me but like i said he wants it all to be red and i was worried enough about the buttons on the coat and the part f her face showing to leave her hands bare too

I'm confused, there was more than one light source used...at least two I can tell...one top camera left and one bottom camera right, yet you say it was from light coming from a (singular)window. Were there tv's or computers or anything else on?

If there is no red bulb...then that was alot of red things you found. lol

ya was surprised how much she had lol

because the course starts off very noob like he told us to use as little photoshop as possible so thats kinda pissin me off lol
