This was with the sun in front (at about 30°), which probably accounts for the loss of detail and texture in the clouds and sky. I still like the shot, though, and printed the exported TIFF this morning.

Really ? Digital does this ? Isn't there any way to compensate in less than ideal light conditions ? Beside HDR...

Yes, digital is more limited regarding dynamic range, leastways the old 4MP camera I used for this is. I could, I suppose, have taken a few readings using the spot setting and then set the shutter manually, but those canoeists were quite quick and I didn't want to miss them! Besides, the clouds were getting very milky by this time (having been more structured earlier in the day) and I'm not sure they would have had much impact on the scene even with film.

The blank sky actually has quite a pleasant tone on paper and I don't think it really hurts the online image either.

If you like it, that's all, what matters. But it is again thing for "luck" discussion, I just like in this sort of views strong sky. It sets the mood.
