Someone from this forum recommended the 'nifty fifty' lens for my Canon. I'm on my third week with it and having an absolute blast! Such a fun little lens! Hope you enjoy the images and opinions are welcomed.

Wow, I really like all of these, but I am drawn the most to the first image. Some might say it's overexposed (?) but I personally love the light and the composition. It "sets a feel," if you know what I mean. Love the peeling paint juxtaposed with the crystal. The water is nice too--very crisp and stylized. Nice work.

You must have just reposted, because now I see the fourth photo.....anyways, this is my second favorite. A lot of the same elements from photo #1...love the monochromatic colors, the use of the window pane, and the reflection at the top. I really like to make use of windows in photos, both looking in and looking out, and you have done this nicely. I really like your work/eye!

i love my nifty fifty. and you can't beat the price. the governors mansion shot is my favorite. i love the detail of the poured glass windows. good job!

The 50mm has always been the classic lens.
It is one of the least complicated lenses in terms of build ... which does make for a very economical high quality lens.

I have always had a 50mm lens ... the nifty-fifty was sold with all cameras back in the day (as zoom lenses where just too expensive.

I had about 50 favorites the day I took photos in my shed. I narrowed it down to 15 that I really liked. I posted to my friends on Facebook asking which they liked best (as far as the ones taken in my shed) and photo #1 had the most hits. The water photos have really been the most popular though. The mansion photo I took today so I haven't had a lot of replies yet.

I got a late start in the year but 18 days ago I started a project of taking photos every single day and then narrowing it down to one that I like most. I'm then adding that photo to a collection I'm calling, "One-A-Day". Some days it's harder to choose my favorite, but other days I'm grasping to find one I like!

It has really helped my photo taking thought process and imagination. Now if I can make it through the rest of the year. :er:

Great self project.

When I got my first SLR (the 50mm was the kit lens) I shot at least two rolls of film every week for the first year. That was no easy feat back then, as it cost about $10.00 a roll to figure out if they were good or bad.

which 50mm is this? 1.8? 1.4?
I was going to buy the 1.4 but one of the fellows on this forum (sorry I'm at a loss for his name) recommended starting with the 1.8 since I'm a beginner...so I took his advice!

Thanks, and I hear you! I've been through my fair share of film too!

You were an ex-film shooter and you did not automatically get the 50mm !!

Actually, I am also thinking of picking up a 30mm ... as I have an APS-C sensor and that is closer to the view of the 50mm (full-frame).

I had an old Sears camera for years. Until 9 months ago (upon entering the digital age) I had no idea what a 50mm even was. Honestly I'm still mind boggled. All I did was pick up that old camera, turn the little focus knob and shoot. I had that camera for over 20 years and finally wore it out. My dad took it from me two years ago (for repairs) but he seems to think it's beyond fixing. I would ask for it back but the film won't advance.

Your mind will unravel in time ... you will not need much technically, it is more important to see the image ... and you seem to have good photographic visual eyes.

Thanks, every day I "see" a little more. Bad thing is... I'm not getting any real work done. I can't seem to put the camera down.

The nifty fifty has introduced me to a whole new world, large appertures and shallow depth of field. It is lovely and addictive, since I bought that lens, I fell in love with bokeh and started to buy fast primes and L lenses. It is a great lens to start with and it will teach you a lot.

I totally agree... what an addictive little lens! I started out taking photos of wildlife, birds mostly. Although I've gotten better I was getting very discouraged. FINALLY, I found someone who told me in two seconds what I was doing wrong. Sadly I had to leave the Photo Forum to get my answer, but at least I found help.

I'm beginning to think I went about this new hobby totally backwards. I'm not giving up on the birds, but working with objects that SIT STILL has been a very pleasant change! Not quite as challenging, but definitely not as heartbreaking!
