New AI Tool in PS

Impressive! It does make a great starting off point. I think you still need some skills to touch up.
Yup, I suggest creating a blank layer above, click to make it active, then "remove>sample all layers". Allows you to make corrections non destructive.

I’ve been using it as “early access”. It works very well for removing branches and wires. Note that you do sometimes need to scroll through the “variations” to get the best choice. It did struggle when I tried to remove some distracting lights in the background of a photo. I don’t think there was enough data for it to decide what to use to fill in so it used lights from another part of the photo which defeated the purpose.

I've found that sometimes it's better to remove things in small bites rather than all at once.

Yes very true and other times the opposite is true! Sometimes you need to circle outside the edges to give it an idea what to replace with. It’s very much trial and error with the tricky stuff. Also anything around the edges of the frame can be an issue for the AI. But still so much easier than cloning or the old PS remove results.

AI has improved, but it's still a tool, and tools always works best in the hands of an experienced user.

Bah. That video was too long. To much chit chat. Rambling. For my taste. I was thinking "just get to the point already."

I believe the tools that don't require permanent/uninterruptible internet connection and require a bit of skill are the best to rely on.

PS and LR Classic run local, it only requires internet every so often to verify license and do updates. As to skill as already pointed out AI can function independently but the results aren't always acceptable, which is where the skill knowing how to use it comes in. As an analogy, I have a wide range of tools in my shop, from hand to power that I'm capable of cutting dovetail joints with. They each require slightly different skill sets, and each produce equal quality fit, the power tool method requires setup time, but is substantially faster for a production run, so knowing when and we're to use a method is a skill also.

I didn't watch the video (hate videos, the info flows too fast) but believe in learning by trying.

I'm a PS beginner but have used it for 30 years or more. It is the most miserable app I know. But it can do things, so I use it.

I keep a "recipe book" with detailed instructions, written mostly by myself, for specific PS tasks. For instance, there is one on focus stacking. There is another one on color separations. Just recently I added one on placing a person into a scene.

PS says with a smile that it's easy. They lie. It's notable that they need to point out how easy it is when they know it is very hard. LOL. How many people on your block can work PS with facility? Probably none.

I also use the beta version of PS, like SquarePeg. And also like SquarePeg, I find it works great at times but fails at other times.

Photoshop, like practically all programs, uses a hierarchical menu system. If you are looking for some command, you may have to hunt through them all to find it. Or go to Google. How do I remove/delete a selection? Where is the "remove" tool? Oh, it's called Clear, and it is under Edit.

A year from now I'll have to do the same and will have forgotten. But no matter! It is in my PS recipe book now!

But it's so easy! Need to remove a background? Just click on Remove Background under Quick Actions. Problem is, sometimes that entry isn't there. Spend 20 minutes looking for it and finally go back to Google.

Maybe one day PS will be task-oriented. Then we will type "Remove those ugly wires in the upper right" and it will proceed to do that, hiccup-free, with the user providing the necessary guidance for the desired result.

In the meantime, I will rely on my hard-won recipes.

@Thiophilos I would consider myself an advanced user of LR & PS, and there is some truth to what you say about the learning curve. Early on I had a book of cheat sheets that I referred to, but as I became more proficient I found it was quicker to google it if I forgot something, (I currently maintain a large library of youtube videos also). The problem of the last couple years has been the rapid flow of updates/new features. Lay out for a couple weeks and it takes a bit to understand all the new stuff.

I don't know if I've gotten lazy or it been the advances in LR, but I find myself staying more and more in LR only. I only go into PS f9r the heavy lifting or the really creative sruff.

Yep, agreed. As time has passed, LR has become way more capable. Most of us now use LR 95%+ of the time. There is little need to go into PS. And when we do, we get stuck easily because we're less used to PS. Plus PS seems to behave differently every time we start it up.

I use a custom workspace layout with assigned shortcut keys for frequently used functions, and custom Actions for certain editing functions (facial editing, eyes, dodge & burn, etc.). However it seems like whenever there's an update it always reverts back to the Adobe options. I guess that's so you can see the new updates?

I use a NVIDIA 4060 with 16GB on board GPU. In addition to the speed it offers, every time Adobe updates, NVIDIA Studio driver updates. Back a couple years ago there was a lag of a few days between Adobe updates and GPU updates. It created serious problem because most the recent updates rely on utilizing excess GPU processor capabilities.

Reminder to self to review my hardware. My box is from 2020 and has a 1660 Ti 6 GB card.
