Would help to know what kind of shooting you plan on doing mostly to give a better recommendation.

Pretty standard stuff! And everyones got to have a 50mm in there camera bag

I have a 50 1.4 and never use it, it's an odd focal length for me.

I would recommend waiting on buying any gear until you know what you're missing and buy accordingly. Throwing money at random gear isn't wise.

As far as tips, read the manual, understand what everything does, take lots of photos. One good way to learn is to shoot in aperture priority for a couple days, then shutter priority, then manual. Pay attention to the changes you see with different settings.

so for all those wanting to know. This is my second camera and i shoot manual almost always. i have a 35 f 1.8 that i also shoot with along with the 18-105. i mostly do portrait and sometimes landscape.
