new here! recommend me a lens!

Hey guys, i'm new to photography. I'm picking up my first 'real' camera within the week. As of now it is going to be a canon 20d, thoughts?

Assuming that camera what would y'alls recommendation be for a good beginner lens or two? I think I am mainly going to be shooting wildlife and the outdoors; mostly things found at a lake(birds, turtles, deer). So I won't be able to get too close. I'd prefer to keep it somewhat cheap...maybe under 2-300.

MY camera is a 20D and when I go to NHL games or concerts I rent (online) a Sigma f2.8 50-150mm lens. Wide aperture for fast shooting and/or low lighting. I really liked the lens a lot. Go to Canon & Nikon Digital SLR Camera and Lens Reviews at The-Digital-Picture.com. Every Canon (and Sigma) lens is reviewed.

Make sure the CMOS Sensor is clean with no scratches, defects, etc.

Thanks for the help and great pics! I got my 20d today and it is great, the lens I bought was a ef 50mm 1.8 II. Like it alot so far. Also for anyone that can help...I was going through some of my moms old camera stuff and I found some lenses she had. One is a 70-300 4-5.6 LDO macro. This was used on an old canon rebel film camera. It fits on my 20d no problem. Is there any reason it wouldn't work for mine and is the lens decent?

The 70-300 is a pretty nice lens! I believe as long as it was made after 1987(?) it should be fully functional with your 20D. Seeing it was on an old Rebel to begin with, you should be good to go! Give it a try and if it works, then you're in business!
