New Photographer re-d7000 and Yongnuo YN560-II Flash

Hi all.
Names mark and im new here,just upgraded from a sony a33 to a nikon D7000.

In the bundle is a Yongnuo YN560-II Flash,i cant seem to get it to work with the D7000,really new to this awesome camera and im kinda lost and feel silly asking.

If anyone could lend a hand i would be really thankful.

When you say you "can't get it to work" with the D7000, what do you mean?

Are you trying to use it ON the camera, attached to the hotshoe? Or are you trying to use it OFF camera, in which case you'll probably need a tether cord or some wireless triggers.

If you have it on the hotshoe and it's not firing, then either your settings are off somewhere (either in camera or on the flash), or it's a faulty flash. I'd the say there is an extremely high probability that it is the first of those two options.
Oh, third option: Are you sure it's locked down on the hotshoe to make good contact? I've done THAT before, and felt a little stupid when I couldn't make it fire.

Well, I would read whatever documentation came with the flash.

Basic operating procedure: set camera mode dial to "M". Set lens to f/7.1, set shutter speed to 1/200 second; Indoors, set ISO to 400, outdoors on bright days, set ISO to lowest value. Turn flash on, experiment with the modes. "A" mode usually is set to correspond to the lens aperture in use, and relies on the user setting the flash and the lens to correspond properly.

TTL mode sets the flash based on whatever aperture happens to be in use, and can adapt the flash power to whatever aperture is in use, within limits of course. Not all in expensive flash units offer TTL contrlol.

Read The Fine Manual tonight, se if that helps. As an aside--it **is** possible that the flash is DOA, or Dead On Arrival, something a good percentage of made in China flash units have become infamous for over the years.

There should be a button on the flash to discharge / TEST the flash.

When you turn it on, then press the Test button, Does it work ?
This is separate from the camera itself. You should be able to test the flash not being on the camera.

^+1 to what Derrel and Astro said. GOOD thought, Astro, I completely forget about the test flash button!

Make a special note of that shutter speed; you don't have it on a shutter speed of higher than 1/250 sec. do you? If you do, that could be why it's not firing.

Looking at a picture of the flash - -
the ON/OFF button is on the right, press and hold it until the LCD screen comes on
Then wait a bit and the PILOT light to the far left, press that and it should flash.

I just watched a Youtube video that is doing the same thing as you describe .. they couldn't figure it out.

There is a solution .. i'm trying to find it .. it's in the camera's menu somewhere

I think that's because the camera's metering mode is one of the automatic or scene modes; if the metering mode is set to M, the flash will NEVER pop up of its own accord.

Yes I watched that video but he didn't make it clear what he had done,he has disabled comments as well.

Is the flash seated correctly? That makes me think the camera doesn't "see" the flash.

It is seated correctly and have checked to make sure,I can't tighten up the wheel no more and all the contacts are clean.

I have the D7000 and the YN560 flash. When I get home, I'll check mine and see if I can help you troubleshoot it a little more. I just don't remember the last time I used mine on camera, so I'll have to test it and see.
