Out of focus, motion blur, bad composition, cluttered background, clipped highlights, etc.

bad composition is a huge one in here, and you are not getting the 'best' of people. motion blur and out of focus just becomes the icing on the cake.

you should definitely go to the library and read some photography books, and keep shooting because experience (hopefully) will make you better at this.

Research for sure.. Even with kids you want to have flattering angles. There is a time and a place in my opinion for head chops but that is not here, there is a specific way it is done to make it look modern and like you meant to do it. Good try for your first time. PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE! Research and look at other portraits and try to understand what they did to get the image. Good Luck!

scoot back or zoom out and try to take a portrait from the shoulders up. Maybe try going outside when the sun is nice about an hour before sunset. Im guessing you are using a 18-55mm kit lens. This lens has a smallish aperture and will not work superfast indoors in low light. So not a great lens to take pictures of children with sense they do not sit still long. Try practicing on adults at first. They can be persuaded to sit still much more easily.

thanx every1! i suck that bad?
yeah i got a list of books i want to buy and ill be going to the bookstore soon.
any suggestions on good books?

thankx again.

The "Art of Photography" by Bruce Barnbaum. I'm in the middle of it right now. It is a deep read but really thought provoking.

Well. These are better than my first shoots xD Thank you too for the book suggestion :)
