New Umbrella CC

I picked up a new stand/umbrella and mounted my 420EX on it. Had some friends come to the park to let me test it out. It was the only light aside from the sun. So critique away.

I assume we're only talking about the lighting; it's not bad, but I see some hot spots which make me wonder if perhaps the umbrella was too far from the subject (and thus, not producing a diffuse enough illumination).

I like #4 , looks like you took them to the SHADE and that is a good thing in that kind of light.

You were close on #2 in balancing the scene, if you shot it in RAW you may be able to get some detail out of the sky and bring him in nicely.
If you turn on the blinking highlights you can prevent the hot spots on the face where they have lost detail.
