I have a single SB-600 with diffuser, my 50mm 1.8, and my 18-105mm kit lens. I seem to have some trouble shooting indoors, especially at night, and even more so with a flash. Does anyone have any specific tips for me?

I'm not very experienced with using a flash. I had planned on just keeping it on camera and bouncing off the ceiling/walls, and toying with my settings until things look right.

But.. if anyone has any particular suggestions for this sort of photographic adventure.. I'm all ears.

Amazon.com: Sync cord for NIKON iTTL - coiled 40" - - this off camera shoe cord works with Nikon D5000 D80 D40 D40X D60 D90 D50 D70 D70s D300 D700 D200 D100 D1X etc.: Camera & Photo

I also have an SB600 and when we have parties and im photographing.. i use this.. hold the flash in my left hand and camera in my right and it makes for much more lighting possibilities. I know the party is tonight so this may not be reasonable unless you rush to a large camera shop, but for future.. i highly recommend it

I like to put my flash on manual 1/2 or 1/4 power with a 50mm prime, point it straight up at the ceiling and take a shot at maybe f/2.8 1/60 ISO-100. If highlights are blown all over either turn down the flash power or use a smaller aperture.

In my experience, bouncing the flash off the ceiling almost always gives a good result..

personally for anything that is just hey im at an event/party and want to have fun i just find my settings and flash power that work and leave them at that for the entire time. If you do care more about photo quality and what not you can use the same concept but keep an out on changes ie(subject distance, celling hight, and so on). You can also use the wall (depending on room) and it may give you a better shot. The biggest problem with firing it off the ceiling is hats and deep set eyes.

Thats all my limited experience has for you. Hope it was useful and good luck

I just bought an SB600--I am doing practice shoots on my Daughter right now and I am having a problem with shadows--so in order to hold the SB in one hand and shoot with another I will need a trigger right?? Any tips on how to get rid of shadows?? My lighting is perfect besides these Darn shadows!!
