I inherited a Canon 1100D back in November 2015 after the demise of my much loved and missed mum. I only picked up the camera a month ago to see if it was charged to view what pictures she had taken, since then I've been hooked.
Admittedly I'm not very good but I think I'm getting better.
Please view, comment and criticise all you like as that's the only way I will improve.

Welcome!

#3 the heron is mostly vertical, so a vertical format would emphasize the subject while eliminating much of the superfluous area to either side.

#5 building in B&W; you haven't included enough of the building for this to be an overall shot of the building, so if you can't fit it all into the frame, you can make detail shots by moving closer and concentrating on just some interesting details.

Thank you for the welcome and reply it is much appreciated, I did take quite a few shots of both the heron and building. do you think these are better?
I've cropped one of the heron plus found a closer picture of the building where I think I've picked out some interesting roof vents.
Cheers Tunny
3.1.

5.1

Yes, heron shot is better.

I think these are a great start!

The one thing I did notice with these is that the focus are off on some. Also, I'd personally have a slightly different composition. Also, I poked around your photobucket a bit, hope you didn't mind. I liked the smokestacks one. I also liked the version 5.1 from your post above in color better than black and white.

See below for my examples. I tend to prefer some bird pictures with a bit of negative space around them to show the environment they're in.

Duck:

Bird in bush (focus should be on bird.. do you plan to post-process any of these? if so, you could try to bump up the exposure/shadows on the bird.):

I don't mind at all mate poke around all you like.
I understand regarding the surroundings plus the colours on the duck seem more prominent.
Glad you like the pottery brick kilns(not that many left now here in Stoke)
Regarding my focus skills it's a bit hit and miss at this stage, I'm still learning the basics before delving into post-process. At least the bush is spot on focus wise lol.

BTW, welcome to the forums!

Good point on learning prior to post-process. It took a while, but I'm finally getting to the point of knowing what I don't know about what I know. After you learn more, you learn there is more you don't know. It's an ongoing process.

I'd like to get a long exposure of the kilns with smoke. :)

Thanks for the warm welcome. Unfortunately all the kilns have been decommissioned but on a good point the remaining are now listed.
I'm more than happy with photography being an ongoing process tbh as I want a progressive hobby/interest. The more I learn the more I want to learn

My first macro photo. Fully manual, set on M and manual focus no tripod or remote shutter, sigma 70-300mm set to macro.

Welcome to TPF.
You have some pretty good shots.
The second crop on the Heron is good but I would place the Heron more to the left to allow a little room in the direction it is looking.

nice shots. looks like you are doing alright..

i do think some of them could be cropped better. as in animals positioned differently in the frame.. for instance that macro shot. generally you want more room in front of it instead of behind it..

Cheers sniper and Danny, I see where you're coming from, I should have got some of the lake in the shot, I think that would have looked better, plus the cropping of the bird pics but I don't quite understand with regard to the macro though.

Macro is close up photography ie. your bee.

Cheers mate but I know what macro is I didn't understand what Danny was saying but after re-reading his post I think I get it.
My positioning is ok with the macro but I was too central in the others (third rule)
