Newbie Looking For Camera Advice

i recommend a Fuji FinePix S5100 if you're not looking to spend too much. it's not an SLR, but it has a lot of the features you want from an SLR. only downsides are it's only 4MP, and you can't change the lens, but that's just fine for learning in my opinion. you can change f/ and shutterspeed and it even has manual focus. i kinda wish i woulda found this cam when i was shopping around for my first. woulda saved me a pretty penny.

Here's one: (only $200 atm!)

here's another: (Buy It Now for $210!)

if you're not heck bent on getting an SLR i think this is a great little cam to start with. it even has that "professional" look to it. (i.e. not a flat rectangular camera)

Hiya ! I am also new...

I started off and still use a compact 35mm Canon Z155 with a 37-155mm lens. With this camera, I used a Fuji Superia ISO 400 colour print film. IMHO, photography begins with a sound understanding of good composition. IIWY, I would completely forget about f stop / shutter speeds. Taking simple landscape photographs well, using the small number of provided features found with this set up, I think will ground you well.

Photography is like making a good curry, learning good composition will give you an excellent stock to add to and experiment with.
