Newbie photos

Hi All.

I've been taking photos for a little while now, but only just started trying to take some better photos. Some photos from a recent trip to Samoa. I think they're ok, but technically I don't really have the knowledge to critique them. Any feedback would be appreciated.

1. Only editing was cropping and converting to black & white.

2. Original image - cropped only.

I like the first one, but the repetition of the umbrellas is kind of lost in the trees on the left. I kind of wonder what it would look like if you kept the same aspect but cropped it just past the second umbrella stand from the right (so the subject would end up being the chairs).

I really like #2. It seems you've hit very nicely on the focus, and the colours in this image is very nice. the yellow on the blue water/sky works very well in my opinion. I sort of wonder what it would look like if you'd open your aperture a little, and let the flower stand out a bit more, but so much that the colours are lost.

btw, is the horizon slightly off level? probably just my eyes trying to see things to improve, when there, imo, aren't many things.
