I have middle finger shots too, and you know what, parents LOVE them! haha

These are all very soft due to not having enough light and having to use a low shutter speed, going by your settings you must be using continuos lighting it needs to be much closer and well difused, for good continuos lighting you have to spend a lot of money

Gary, last I checked the sun light is FREE! :greenpbl:

She said that these were shot with studio lights or did you miss that bit :greenpbl:

I'm not sure what kind of studio lights the OP was using, but they were either not set correctly or they are not good enough for lighting in this situation.
A baby is small. Move that kid over to a window and use the sun light! :)
IF you do not have studio lights or are looking for "cheap" continuous lighting, obviously money is an issue...
Also, I'd stay away from continuous lighting and kids, period. They get HOT. Do you really want to know what is going to happen if one of those lights should happen to fall over on a 4 day old newborn?

I was having problems with getting the lighting right - I had closed the aperture down but it made them too dark. I was really trying to avoid using the flash because I didnt want to wake him up.

What do you mean by flat? I know I need to work on posing a lot, so thanks for the idea of where to go - I've been relying on google images for most of my ideas, but there are so many of the same shots over and over.

Focus wise... that will all be better in a few months when I get new contacts. My eyes change when I'm pregnant, but being 81/2 months now I'm not going to go get new contacts lol. Its really hard to focus even on everyday things for me right now, so I was kind of over-relying on the autofocus. They would probably be even more blurry if I had used mf lol.

Strange, I know that sometimes your eyes will change a bit during pregnancy but not enough to throw the focus off by that much--especially using AF.

The out of focus was caused by too slow shutter speed, even if they were focused properly 1/30 is too slow

Holy crap - I got to sleep for 7 hours and come back to all these posts! In response to the focus issue - I already needed new contacts before I got pregnant, but then once I found out I was preggo I decided to wait on them. I realize that doesn't excuse the lack of focus, and that I need to adjust my shutter, but it certainly doesn't help.

I bought some cheap lights off ebay (should have done more research before I bought them, but living overseas I was fairly limited for places that would ship them to me). They will be going away when I get to the states and can find some decent lights - and also have a place where I can leave my stuff set up instead of always having to take it down.

my set up is pretty small - I have a backdrop holder and three backdrops (white, black, and the blue), and the lights (two higher lights and one knee high). I would have put him by the window, but I don't have access to many that get good light, plus it was really cloudy that day. I think that covered most of the main things, I'll have to go back to page1 and check :D
