I finally bought a Canon EF 50mm 1.8 II today. Will be playing with it a bit in the next few days... Anything "special" about this lens that I should know? I've heard very good things about it.

Be careful if you have a lens hood for it; impact to the lens hood can cause the lens to separate into two pieces. Be careful when shooting it toward strong light sources. Those are probably its two special areas.

Thanks... I'll try to keep those in mind.

As for pointing it at strong light sources... Be careful of what?

Manual focus is near worthless on it, but AF is fine so go with it. I just got rid of mine and picked up the f/1.4. I got alot of use out of the nifty fifty and loved it for low light. It's a very sharp lens, even at 1.8 its nice, but after 2.8 it is very sharp. Enjoy, best price/performance on any lens hands down.
