Night Photos

That doesn't look horrible to me by any means. Having said that, I think the brights are saturating (relative to the darker areas) so they almost seem to bleed out (that's not the right term but I can't think of a better one) and so it looks like the detail isn't so great. Or maybe I'm not getting what you don't like about the photo...

You may have already said what lens you use, but some of the "softness" may be caused by your lens. At least when I look at the photo, it has characteristics that remind me of when I was shooting with a tele zoom that was ALWAYS really soft at 200mm. Mine was worse than yours but that's a strong possibility.

I agree, the picture looks good.

Here's what I see. The exposure is good for the sky and water, which means the lights on the buildings are overexposed. That means you will get light flare.

If we expose for the lights, we'll lose the sky and water, and probably some of the face of the buildings.
