Nikkor Lens Advice

ac12,

Great advice and things to consider. I don't know if I'll need the faster auto focusing of the 70-300 over the 55-300. I suppose if I did, maybe I should move on from my D90 so I can utilize AF-P lenses?

Yes a camera upgrade is another option.
Like the lens it should be a sit down and really think out where you want to go, as there are MANY choices.

The biggest decision is if you want to go to FX/FF or stay with DX sensor format.
FX will be the more expensive option.

Even with DX there are 4 choices; D3400, D5600, D7200, D7500.
  • The D7500 was recently released as the replacement for the D7200.
  • To me, the major change is the ISO sensitivity is much higher (up to 25600) than your D90 (3200). So low light photography is much easier than with the older cameras. My prior camera was the D70 with max ISO of 1600.
  • Sensor goes from 12MP on your D90 to about 24MP on the current cameras.
One thing to consider is if you want a pivoting rear screen (D5600 and D7500). This feature is GREAT for taking low or high angle shots. I've been belly down on the ground, to get a low angle shot, because I don't have a pivoting rear screen on my D7200. That is OK on a clean floor, but not fun in the dirt or mud. I would almost upgrade from my D7200 to the D7500 just for that single feature . . . because I would use it.

Thank you for your advice. You've given me a lot to think about.

In case any of you were waiting for an update, I ended up purchasing the 55-300 and 35mm prime lenses from Adorama. Can't wait to start trying them out!

I used the combination of 18-55, 55-200 for quite a while and got good results with my D5100. The 55-200 is small and light and I could easily carry it in my jacket pocket. I also have used and still have a 35mm f1.8. Great lens for just about anything. I have no experience with either the 18-300 or 55-300.
