is it normal for this lens to focus a bit slower when zoomed in at 70mm? i did a quick test at both 24mm and 70mm (lens cap on both times) and it seemed slower at 70mm. is this normal for this lens? for any lens?

You're having a laugh, aren't you? With the cap on, what is it going to focus on?

nono, that was the point. i was noting the speed at which it focuses from infinity to closest back to infinity.

I love fishing, matter of fact I was once a professional fisherman.......a long long time ago

no!! but it actually does!! with the lens cap off, the focus speed on an object at 24mm and 70mm are the same. but i was wondering why the 70mm would take longer with cap on

Yes, that's normal--wider focal lengths don't require the elements to move as far when focusing.

ahh!! ok. thank you djacobox372!

"So I was trying to focus on this black jaguar in the absolute pitch black of a starless night and god damn if that lens didn't seem to have focusing problems!"

Or, perhaps another perspective...

"So I was using this butter knife to drink water the other day and I was surprised to find that the knife just didn't seem to do it that well!"
