Nikon 50mm f/1.8 Question

For apertures larger than f/4, shooting action shots are nearly impossible....The only way you can pull it off is if you know exactly where your subject is going to be and you can pre-focus to that spot. If you are looking to use the lens as a fast indoor lens for fast moving action like sports or playing children, you are better off going with the f/1.8 35mm AF-S that has the autofocus built into the lens. Just tonite, I just took my son and wife to an indoor "bounce house gym" and put the 50mm on. Shooting at 1600 ISO, I was able to get between 1/80 and 1/200 shutter speeds at f/2.8. Out of about 50 shots I took, only about 5 were even worth taking out of the camera, and I hit the "Delete" button dozens of times in-camera.

Other than that.... the lens is bad ass. I find it great for portraits and realitivly still photography.

Long story short...I tried to decide between the 35mm and the 50mm f/1.8 because I only wanted to buy one lens.... Now that I have the 50mm.... I am still going to have to get the 35mm. Not because the 50mm is bad, because its quite the opposite, but because it dosen't fit all of the situations I wanted it for.

I have the 50mm 1.4 lens and that camera. I use the combination quite a bit. My lens is old (got it from my grandfather) I cannot meter with the camera and the little green focus spot does not work. This lens can be real hard to focus with the low depth of field. When i first got it i couldn't get clear images to save my life. What i started doing was to put my shutter on multiple shots, hold the trigger and while the camera was firing i would rotate the focus. I would get a good focused image using that method. as I had more time to practice i've gotten to the point I can now focus without having to do that. the trick is to really stare at the spot your focusing on (like the eyes). and dial it in.

this is an image taken with a d3000 and the 50mm 1.4. notice how the dop changes just from the nose to the ears, Hair focusing!!! As you see, i slightly missed my focus...lol
