Nikon 80-200 F2.8: Do I need a filter for protection?

It doesn't have to be a UV filter... Skylight and Clear filters are good too..

I would much rather wipe and clean the front of a filter several times during a day of shooting than constantly rub against the coatings on the lens element or front plate. If the shot is such that the filter might cause an issue, it only takes a couple of seconds to take it off..

I live in the desert......dust and sand gets on everything.. a filter ensures it doesn't get on the lens glass:D

Its always good to have a UV filter to protect the lens. A lens hood is always good to have to.

Thanks for the info. I think I'm going to go with the Hoya Super HMC filter. Any thoughts on this filter before I buy it?

I don't want to buy a glass or skylight filter because they are significantly more expensive and harder to find.

Thoughts? It's cheap, high quality, and does what it says on the box. No noticable image quality drop, and creates a single ghost artifact only in dark blue when you shoot into an active lightsource like a street lamp.

I have them on all my lenses except for one.
