Nikon AF 50mm f/1.8D lens...

i have found two of these lenses (50mm 1.8D) for around 100-150 shipped on ebay...i know this will fit the D40, but will the AF work?

It won't autofocus, but the problem isn't nearly as bad as most people make it out to be, because you'll still have the focus confirmation dot in the lower left of the finder, so while it won't do the focusing for you, it'll tell you when your subject is in focus. It'll be okay for anything other than action, then.
