This is a user review which means I am not claiming to be very knowledgeable about every piece of data on the camera, this review comes from experience using it in events and regular use.

I have been using my Nikon D3300 for about 5 months and I am very impressed with this camera.

Pro

The sensor - its a really good and modern sensor which can give a good fight to any other modern APS-C sensor.

You have an AA filter free 24MP sensor that offers excellent low light performance and very good image quality with impressive dynamic range.
You can use the camera up to 6400iso but I would be careful going higher, its possible and its 12800 is still in its native range but the noise is getting more visible.

Price- I bought this camera body only for 400$ (CAN) which was about 280$ (USD) back then.
I think its great value for money

Size, Weight and build quality - For a DSLR this is a small and light weight camera which is great coupled with DX kit lens, feels very good in the hand, problem is when I used big fast zoom lens like the 70-200mm 2.8 on it the camera does feels a bit too small and light but I rarely have this lens mounted on this camera. Build quality is good and while not as good as my D750 it also didn't cost as much so over all its feels like a well made body.

Buttons lay out is very Nikon classic and its very easy to get use to it and use it, I have no problems using the camera and changing settings on it when needed.

Menus - Very easy to work with, Nikon made this camera to first time camera users and I find its very intuitive and the camera explains it all as you go.

Con

Being the lowest in Nikon's DSLR lineup you have less buttons then on the high bodies so this camera is more menu driven then other more expensive bodies, so as an example to change flash compensation you need to press the "i" button scroll with the pad to the flash compensation press OK and then up or down with pad to change setting.

On a more positive note once you get use to it even in the pressure of event it takes me few seconds to change settings and I am good to go.

You have very little options in this camera, you really get very little toys you can see on higher end cameras like lens adjustment or in body AF motor.

More Information

The auto focus on this camera is good even if its limited, I will always try to use the centre point as its the only cross type, use this point and you are good, it will focus even in very hard low contrast or low light situation, the other 10 points work well but in harder conditions not so much.

Screen is nice and bright with good image quality.

Who would I recommend this camera for - obviously for new camera users, its not expensive and designed to be a mans first serious camera, menus explain all the basic functions and are easy to access.
Its also a very good travel camera because of its size and weight.
Its good as backup camera again because its not expensive yet it offers good performance.

Who I wouldn't recommend is people who pass the basic level and want more from their one camera they own, for that I would recommend the D5xxx or D7xxx bodies

Summery

Considering its price this camera is a good deal, you are getting a camera that can produce very good images even in lower light situation, its small and light weight and easy to use.
I enjoy using it and see it in my stable as my number two and when I get another FX body my number 3 camera.
I think its one of the best (if not the best) camera in its price range.

Try pushing the flash button with the exposure comp button and turning the wheel, that's a flash comp exposure method on the d3100, I imagine its the same on the d3300. I only found this one out very recently.

I find the d3100 rather excellent for its price/performance/bang for buck.I think with that 24mp fancy sensor all the newer cameras have the d3300 is likely a dinger.

Things must be ramping up for you, are you getting another fx?

At the moment I mostly still do volunteer events but I am slowly starting to look for my own events, once I will get enough work I will look for a used D610
I find its very hard to use an FX and DX with FX lenses my 24-70 is really like 36-90mm so I struggle many time with wider shots when I am doing group shots.
Also as good in low light as the D3300 is its no match to FX and it is very noticeable when I process the files, not a huge deal as all I need to do is add a little noise reduction but I rather no if I can and the D750 pretty much almost never need any NR while the D3300 needs it
