Nikon D80 file numbering

I bought myself a D80 recently and am trying to change the way it numbers files... Is there a way to set it up so even after moving a load of photos off the camera, the file numbers carry on from where they were, giving a running total so to speak?

I use Canon but I assume that Nikon would let you set the file numbering system. Check your manual. On my Canon, it's set to continuous, but there are other options for file numbering.
