Nikon ML-L3 Shutter controller Query

The Nikon ML-L3 remote shutter switch do they go wrong? My one which I have now for over a year is dead and I was wondering if it was just a battery issue or are the devices prone to faults.

Have you tried a new battery? If that didn't work, perhaps it's due to the situation you were trying to use it in. Out in bright sunlight, they really don't work all that well as they are IR and there's places where there's so much ambient IR the remote isn't strong enough to overcome it.

Sometimes the camera can get finicky about the angle you're using the remote as well.

If it does seem to be on the fritz, just buy another.

These remotes are finicky indeed, but they do work. I'd try a new battery and see how it works. Remember to point at the direction where the IR spots are on the camera. Its just like a TV remote.

I wish Nikon could do some kind of RF remote, that would be really cool.

There are lots of good, and inexpensive IR remotes available on-line. I have a very nice Yongnuo which has an intervalometer, wired and wireless operation, timer, and a number of other features. It was a whopping ~$50 on eBay as I recall.

If you have an IR-capable smart device, there's apps you can download for free.

Thanks for the advice,
I only use it at night, I was shooting a fire work display the other night and it worked right up until the point the fireworks started, which was aggravating. I do suspect that the button may have been depressed by things that were left on top of it. How much are those batteries?
