I just bought a used SB-24 and after each flash discharge, it makes a high-pitch whine as if it's recharging. After a full power flash, the whine is very loud and squeaky. Is this normal?

Thanks :)

Kinda
Its normal if its not completely outrageous.

I guess it's not outrageous. Just louder than I expected.

Ya
thats how it is
especially with older flashes.

Thanks, this makes me more at ease about my purchase :)

I only experience a weird squeak when the batteries need changing/recharging. Otherwise, high pitched noises are completely normal. :)

This noise gets louder when things get old. The capacitor itself may be on the way out. When the whining doesn't stop even when the flash is charged you know it's leaking current and time for a service. That said I would put up with it till it breaks.

Thanks for all the feedback all :)

The problem turned out to be the batteries. They were old Alkaline batteries, and after a full flash discharge the unit would squeak pretty loudly. I just bought a set of Lithium AA's and the flash recharge sound is now a smooth, soft whine :)

Ahhh same problem, but other end of the circuit. Whining because it can't get enough charge not because it loses too much :lmao:

Good to see you got it working.
