Nikon TC-20e III Focus/Speed

I just purchased the new Nikon TC-20eIII and have paired with a 70-200 2.8 VRII on my D700.

So with internal camera settings etc., how do I get the fasted focus and sharpest pictures? My desire is to shoot nature photography, and some sports.
