I would like to upgrade from my Nikon D5000 to a better camera. What camera would you suggest for a Newborn/Children photographer???

Budget?

The D7000 is nice

What do you need that your D5000 isn't giving you now?

Newborn/child photography really isn't all that taxing on a camera's abilities. You might be much better off upgrading your lens(s) and lighting.

No budget. I have 2 great lenses and great lighting system, just not getting the great crisp quality out of my camera. D5000 is a beginner camera and my business is going bigger everyday and need to upgrade!

Since no budget is not an issue I would suggest the D3x, or since you have the D5000, you can upgrade to the D7000 and use your DX lenses with it. Do you plan do shoot only photo's or do you plan to shoot video as well? Can you post some of your pics so we can look at them to show us what you are currently getting with the Camera?

Is the crispness pre or post processing that you are not happy with?

Crispness is not a feature that expensive cameras have and beginner SLR cameras don't.

Maybe you could post up a few examples and let us try to diagnose the issue. 9 times out of 10, it's something that you're doing...not the fault of the camera.

If you know the glass and the lights are great, why can't you identify which Nikon camera would also be great for your niche?

+1 on please post some examples. Since you are posting in the Beginners forum section, we may be safe thinking you might have a gap in your technical understand of how your camera/lens functions.

Well when you say budget doesn't matter... sure it does; are you willing to spend 800, 1200, 2400 or 8000?

If you would like to stay with a DX body my suggestion is to get a D90 or the better D7000 or D300s. If you want to go more towards the pro cameras you're looking at a D700 which has a replacement coming and other higher models.
Upgrading to a FX body will require new FX lenses which are pricier and better in most cases.

My suggestion is to get a nice 35mm or 50mm 1.4/1.8 which would be really good for indoor pictures and really reliable for portraits and decide what camera body would suit you better. Also keep in mind your current camera does not have an internal AF motor so these inexpensive prime lens will not auto-focus unless you get the AF version which comes at a higher in price. If you change the body to a D90 ,D700 or a D300s or higher then you don't have to worry about the AF motor and a cheaper prime can be picked up.

It honestly sounds like you're not using the correct settings for the camera since you mentioned the light is not a problem and 99% of photography issues come from not having enough light or not using the correct settings for the ambiance. Can you post a shot or two and I'm sure more TPH users will give you some advice. Also name a price for what you're willing to spend for new gear as there is a lot of choice in photography gear which all relates to $. You can pick up a lens for 140$ or 1400$ both pretty comparable in terms of image quality, but one will give you more options and uses.

I'm wondering what f/ stop your images are being shot at ... you have low f/stop glass and if you are shooting them at those low f/ stops you will get 'soft' (technically, shallow depth of field) images.

To me, that looks like a lighting problem more than anything.
