I have been looking at photos on TPF and at times people say that the picture has noise in it. What does that mean? I have searched the forum and I could not find an explaination. As you can tell i am new to photography. Thanks eveyone.

Noise is inconsistency in colors, unwanted fluctuation of colors, etc.

Grainy images could be called noisy images, loss of resolution causes noise, etc.

Take a picture with 1600 ISO and than 100 ISO. COmpare and you'll see it.

If you saved a High resolution file as a .gif you'd notice loss in color...similar to noise.

Lookwood thanks a bunch for the link. It did a great job explaining. I don't know why I didn't "Wiki" it. Wikipedia is the 2nd greatest website of all time!

Noise is what some people in the film days referred to as "grain".
It's not a bad thing if it's intentional. I actually use it a lot, digitally.

Grain in film is generally less distracting that noise from a digital sensor... if you like grain, you'll like shooting with film.

Or you should get a copy of Alien Skin Exposure which has an excellent grain simulator for photoshop. But I agree with elsaspet noise isn't always a bad thing, especially when taking photos of bands. And even more so when taking black and white photos of garage bands.
