I had the older Nikkor AF version of this lens. really wishing I had kept it. (along with my 300mm f/4) it was a tank, and IQ was outstanding! for a long time it practically lived on my D200. I can only imagine the D version is >/= its predecessor. This is probably the best long-ish fast AF prime you are going to get without spending about 5 times the money.

edit: KEH is selling the older 180mm 2.8 AF for what the OP is asking for the "D" version.
